What is the future continuous tense?

Future continuous tense is used to express an event or an action that is taking place at a certain period in future time, or future continuous tense can refer to an event or an action that will be progressing at a certain time in the future.

Future continuous tense formula

Future continuous has helping verbs, which are will be and shall be.

The future continuous is formed as follows:

Subject + will be/shall be + participle 

A participle is formed by adding “ing” to the root of the verb.

Future continuous sentences can be affirmative, negative, or questions (or questions with negative), and all of them follow the same formula but are a little bit different.

Affirmative 

The affirmative sentences of the future continuous follow this formula.

Subject + will be/shall be + participle + the rest of the sentence 

Example 

  • Ali will be traveling with his mother at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
  • The plane will be flying at that time.
  • I shall be sleeping at 11:00 p.m. next night.
  • The students will be competing in the school at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.
  • Our team will be playing at 6:00 next Sunday.

Negative 

To form a negative sentence in the future continuous, put “not” in between “will” and “be,”and also you can use the formula below.

Subject + will not be/shall not be + participle the rest of the sentence 

Example 

  • Ali will not be travelling with his mother at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
  • The plane will not be flying at that time.
  • shall not be sleeping at 11:00 p.m. next night.
  • The students will not be competing in the school at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.
  • Our team will not be playing at 6:00 next Sunday.

Question 

Question sentences of future continuous tense are made using this formula:

will/shall + Subject + be + participle + the rest of the sentence

Example 

  • Will Ali be traveling with his mother at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow?
  • Will the plane be flying at that time?
  • Shall I be sleeping at 11:00 p.m. next night?

Question with Negative 

To make a question with the negative of the future continuous tense, use this formula:

will/shall + not + subject + be + participle + the rest of the sentence
