Definition
verb to be:- is a state of existence of person thing or animal . We use to indicate a location for example Ahmed was in Hamar last year , you are indicating that Ahmed was in Hamar last. An other example John is in Turkey this year, aslo you are indicating that Ahmed is in Turkey.
Types of verb to be
Verb to be has three types:-present, past and future. This classification based on the time verb is happening, for example if you say:-Today teachers are in the class this means that at the time speaking teachers are present in the class so that this statement is verb to be present, if you say:-The lion was in the forest is statement is verb to be past, similarly if you say:-I shall be in yamen and this one is verb to be future.
Verb to be present
Verb to be present is a verb which is existing now, and it is used with the auxiliary verbs of:-is, are and am.
To understand this lesson well we need to know that there are seven pronouns and also the meaning of pronoun is:- a word that is used instead of noun. These pronouns are :- he, she ,it, I, you ,they and we :, so in verb to be present He, she, it and all singular nouns go with (is) ,you we they and aĺl plural nouns go with (are) and I only goes with (am).
Example with “is”
Statement:-It is a cat.
To change this sentence into negative form put not after “is”.
negative:-It is not a cat.
To make it into question “is” comes first.
Question:-Is it a cat?
To make it question with Negative “is” and “not” come first
Question with Negative:-Isn’t it a cat?
Example with “are”
Statement:-They are teachers.
To change this sentence into negative form put not after “are“.
negative:-They are not teachers.
To make it into question “are” comes first.
Question:-Are they teachers?
To make it question with Negative “are” and “not” come first
Question with Negative:-Aren’t they teachers?
Example with (am)
Statement:-i am a student.
negative:-i am not a student.
Question:-am I a student?
Question with Negative:-aren’t I a student?
Note:that (I) in question with Negative has two forms you can say:-
aren’t I a student? Or you can say:-
am I not a student?
Verb to be past
Verb to be past is used to speak about a condition or state in past time for example:-I was a teacher. Was and were go with verb to be past . I, he, she,it and singular nouns take “was” you, we , they and all plural nouns take “were“.
Example
Statement:-Ali was in London.
negative:-Ali was not in London.
Question:-Was Ali in London?
Question with Negative:-Wasn’t Ali in London?
Other example
Statement:-Theives were in the market.
negative:-Theives were not in the market.
Question:-Were Theives in the market?
Question with Negative:-Weren’t Theives on the market?
Verb to be future
Verb to be future is used to speak about a condition or state in future time for example:-I shall be a doctor. Shall be and will are used with verb to be future, I and we go with (Shall be) he, she, it, they,you,singular and plural go with (will be)
Example
Statement:-Mohamed will be in somali next year.
negative:-Mohamed will not be in somali next year.
Question:- will Mohamed be in somali next year?
Question with Negative:-won’t Mohamed be in somali next year?
on other example
Statement:-We shall b in party tomorrow.
negative:-We shall not be in party tomorrow.
Question:-Shall not We be in party tomorrow?
Question with Negative:-Shan’t we be in party tomorrow?
